OUR COACHES
DEMARCUS GATLIN
Demarcus Gatlin brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and energy to the AthletIQ coaching team. As a long-time professional player and a respected figure in the Geelong basketball community, Demarcus leads by example — both on the court and beyond.
Currently captaining Geelong’s NBL1 team, he’s known for his strong work ethic, defensive intensity, and deep commitment to helping others grow — not just as players, but as people.“I want kids to leave my sessions feeling confident. If they can get one percent better, I feel like the session was successful. I want them to know that someone is in their corner. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
Demarcus’s coaching philosophy is rooted in care, connection, and consistency. He focuses on building belief and bringing out the best in every athlete, making him an invaluable mentor to the next generation.
MATT JOHNS
Matt Johns brings elite basketball experience and a genuine passion for development to the AthletIQ coaching team. A professional athlete and Brisbane Bullets NBL development player, Matt has competed at the highest levels both in Australia and the United States, giving him firsthand insight into what it takes to perform — and progress — in elite environments.
Known for his athleticism, defensive presence, and strong basketball IQ, Matt focuses on helping athletes build the fundamentals that translate directly to on-court success. His coaching emphasizes movement efficiency, skill development, and understanding the game at a deeper level.
“With a calm, approachable coaching style, Matt creates an environment where athletes feel supported, challenged, and confident to grow — both on and off the court.”
NICK OWUSU
Nick Owusu brings a wealth of basketball experience and a strong commitment to player development to the AthletIQ coaching team. A Supercat Life Member, 360 Game veteran, and 2x championship player, Nick’s impressive career is a testament to his skill, dedication, and leadership on the court.
“The hallmark of good players isn’t talent it’s discipline. Discipline to turn up and attack their training without fail even when they don’t feel like it.
I’ll take a disciplined player over a talented player every time “
With a coaching style grounded in hard work, discipline, and positive encouragement, Nick creates a space where players are motivated to challenge themselves and grow both on and off the court.
